Ottawa:

Canada expects to receive a record 500,000 permanent residents by 2025. It has also increased its targets for next two years, as it seeks to increase arrivals to alleviate a severe labour shortage.

Canada is now expecting to accept 465,000 new permanent residents in 2023. This is an increase of 4% from the previous target. It also expects 485,000 in 2024. That’s an increase 7.5%.

Fraser said in a statement that the “This Year’s Immigration Levels Plan will help businesses find workers they need.”

He stated that Canada would be able to meet its obligations to refugees fleeing violence and conflict in their own countries by setting new targets. Canada is expected to decrease the number of government-assisted refugee resettlements by about a quarter, from 23,550 in 2020 to 15,250 2025.

Since taking office in 2015, Justin Trudeau as Prime Minister has intensified immigration. The country is on track for exceeding its goal of approximately 431,000 newcomers in this year’s fiscal year.

Canada is experiencing an acute shortage of skilled workers, especially in the healthcare industry and skilled trades. The most recent data on job vacancies showed that there were 958.500 vacant jobs in Canada in August, and that there were 1.0 million people who are unemployed.

Many unemployed people don’t have the skillsets or don’t live in the right area of the country to fill the open positions.

These new targets will raise the number economic immigrants by around 13% between 2023- 2025. They also include steep increases in regional programs that help to funnel people into provinces or regions other than major urban centers.

Remarkable numbers of Canadians are now retired, prompting a massive exodus of Canada’s most highly-skilled workers and leaving businesses scrambling.
