A special court of Federal Investigation Agency (Federal Investigation Agency) acquitted Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday in a multi-million dollar money laundering case.
November 2020: Shehbaz and his sons were arrested by the FIA under sections of both the Anti-Money Laundering Act, and Prevention of Corruption Act. They are accused of laundering over PKR 16 million.
“Special Judge Central Lahore (Ijaz Hasanawan) acquitted Prime Minster Shehbaz and his son, former Punjab chief minister Hamza Shehbaz from the PKR16 billion money laundering case which was filed against them two-years ago after there was no direct evidence against them,” a court official said to PTI.
Last month, Shehbaz & Hamza were indicted by the FIA’s Special Court. They filed a petition to be acquitted and their lawyers began arguments.
Amjad Pervaiz, their lawyer, presented final arguments’ to the court on Monday. He argued that the FIA doesn’t have any evidence against him.
The defense counsel stated that no prosecution witness had testified against petitioners. He claimed that it was impossible for the prosecution to prove any connection between the petitioners’ bank accounts and those of the proxy benami banks, which it included as part of its investigation report.
Suleman Shehbaz was already declared a proclaimed indictable by the court. Suleman has been evading the UK since 2019. Shehbaz says often that Suleman looks after his family’s business.
