Nissan and Uber have struck a deal for Nissan to supply the ride-hailing service with 2,000 electric Leafs, manufactured in the UK. As part of Uber’s Clean Air Plan, aimed at transitioning all Uber vehicles in London to electric by 2025, Nissan’s all-electric Leaf with a range of 168 miles will be offered to Uber drivers at a discounted rate.
Additionally, Nissan will provide Uber with an EV education program, transaction price, and marketing strategy to promote the adoption of zero-emission vehicles among drivers. Uber’s Clean Air Plan, launched in January 2019, introduced a 15p-per-mile tariff on all London journeys to fund a plug-in car grant, with £80 million raised so far out of a £200 million target.
Switching to an EV under this plan could save Uber drivers up to £4,500 compared to traditional cars. The initiative has already seen a significant increase in the number of Uber trips completed in EVs, with a 350% rise in the first year alone.
Andrew Humberstone, managing director of Nissan Motor GB, emphasized the collaborative effort between Nissan and Uber in addressing urban mobility challenges while improving air quality. Jamie Heywood, Uber’s regional general manager for Northern and Eastern Europe, expressed support for London Mayor’s vision for clean air measures, highlighting the partnership with Nissan as a significant step towards achieving Uber’s goal of an all-electric fleet by 2025.
