Cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike has publicly denied allegations from Delta Airlines, asserting that it should not be held responsible for the airline’s flight disruptions following the global outage on July 19. This incident, which impacted over 8 million computers worldwide, created significant operational challenges for numerous organizations, including Delta Airlines. According to Bloomberg, the outage led to severe system issues for Delta, resulting in thousands of cancelled flights and prompting a federal investigation.

In a letter addressed to Delta Airlines, CrowdStrike expressed disappointment with Delta’s accusations, stating, “We are highly disappointed by Delta’s suggestion that CrowdStrike acted inappropriately and strongly reject any allegation that it was grossly negligent or committed misconduct.” The letter, dated August 4 and signed by Michael Carlinsky, co-managing partner of Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, emphasized that Delta had ignored multiple offers of assistance from CrowdStrike. The letter specifically mentioned that CrowdStrike’s CEO, George Kurtz, had reached out to Delta’s CEO, Ed Bastian, to offer onsite help but received no response.

CrowdStrike reiterated its willingness to collaborate with Delta to resolve the issues, expressing hope in a separate email statement that Delta would eventually agree to work together. Despite this outreach, Delta’s response has been less than cooperative. A Delta spokesperson acknowledged receiving the letter but referred to Bastian’s previous comments to CNBC, where he mentioned potential legal action to recover financial losses, compensate passengers, and address reputational damage. The outage had a substantial impact on Delta, which is headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia. The airline faced a $500 million loss after cancelling over 5,500 flights in the days following the incident, which affected computers running Microsoft Corp.’s Windows operating system.

CrowdStrike’s letter also highlighted that its contractual liability is limited to a single-digit million-dollar amount. This contractual clause could play a significant role in any potential legal battles between the two companies.

Other airlines were also significantly affected by the mid-July disruption. Spirit Airlines projected a $7.2 million loss in third-quarter operating income due to the outage. AirAsia, whose co-founder Tony Fernandes has also demanded compensation, faced similar challenges. This widespread impact underscores the severity of the outage and the complex challenges it posed to the aviation industry and its associated partners.

The ongoing dispute between Delta and CrowdStrike highlights the broader issues of accountability and responsibility in the face of large-scale cyber disruptions. It also underscores the critical need for effective communication and collaboration between cybersecurity firms and their clients during crises.
