Marvel fans are scratching their heads over a character’s appearance in the Venom 3 trailer.
On Wednesday (3 June), Sony dropped the first trailer for Venom: The Last Dance, the third and final film in the Spider-Man spin-off series. Traditionally, Sony’s Spider-Man films have been separate from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) due to character rights. However, recent changes in licensing agreements have led to more collaboration between the studios. For example, Tom Hardy, who leads the Venom series, made a cameo in the mid-credits scene of Spider-Man: No Way Home, set in the MCU. Now, another MCU character appears in The Last Dance trailer, leading to confusion among fans.
The trailer features Chiwetel Ejiofor reprising his role as Karl Mordo, first seen in Doctor Strange and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. This time, Mordo is seen in military gear, leading a group of operatives to capture Venom, a departure from his character in the Doctor Strange films, suggesting a different version of Mordo.
Fans are confused, especially since Mordo appears at the same location as Venom from the No Way Home post-credits scene, implying that The Last Dance is set in the MCU. However, the inconsistencies suggest it might not be. Some fans believe this could be an alternate version of Mordo, causing continuity concerns. One fan noted, “So you’ve got Chiwetel Ejiofor in Venom 3 as a new character, which takes place in its own universe. But right here he’s in the MCU & he’s not playing Baron Mordo, who he previously played in the MCU… & he’s taking back the symbiote that was left in the MCU. Good Job Sony!” Another fan asked, “I have questions. Like, why cast the actor that plays Mordo? Why was not-Mordo in 616 collecting the symbiote? Doesn’t that ruin No Way Home’s end credit scene?”
Furthermore, another MCU fan commented on X/Twitter, “Am I the only one finding it weird that Mordo is now in Venom: The Last Dance? Not complaining though because I like the guy, but the multiverse is making it weird.”
