Industry Icon Vineet Nayyar, Former Tech Mahindra Vice Chairman, Dies

Vineet Nayyar, a distinguished leader in the Indian business world and former executive vice chairman of Tech Mahindra, passed away at the age of 85. His death marks the conclusion of a pivotal chapter for the Mahindra Group, where his leadership played a crucial role.

Nayyar’s illustrious career began in the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), followed by significant international positions, including a tenure at the World Bank. He made substantial contributions to India’s energy sector as the inaugural chairman of GAIL, setting the foundation for the state-owned corporation’s future success. Additionally, he held prominent roles in the tech industry, serving as the managing director of HCL Corporation Limited and vice chairman of HCL Technologies Limited.

In 2000, Vineet Nayyar joined Mahindra British Telecom (MBT), later renamed Tech Mahindra. Along with two colleagues, collectively known as the “Three Musketeers,” Nayyar infused a startup mindset into the company, elevating MBT to the top ranks of the Indian IT industry. Anand Mahindra, Chairman of the Mahindra Group, praised Nayyar’s transformative impact on Tech Mahindra, emphasizing his wisdom and leadership.

In the wake of Nayyar’s passing, the business community expressed profound grief and admiration. Nasscom, the leading IT industry association, recognized Nayyar’s visionary leadership and the enduring mark he left on the industry. CP Gurnani, former MD and CEO of Tech Mahindra, shared his deep personal loss, referring to Nayyar as a friend, philosopher, brother, and guide. Mohit Joshi, the current MD and CEO of Tech Mahindra, highlighted Nayyar’s foundational contributions as an institution builder, whose ambitious vision will continue to steer the company.

The Mahindra Group announced Nayyar’s death with great sorrow, underscoring his statesmanship, sharp business acumen, and commitment to society. They conveyed their condolences to his family, promising to uphold the values he instilled within the organization. Anand Mahindra’s heartfelt tribute emphasized the significant personal and professional loss felt by those who knew and worked with Nayyar.

Nayyar’s legacy is defined by his extraordinary career accomplishments and the lasting influence he had on the organizations he led. His passing represents a significant loss to the Indian business community, but his principles and vision will continue to inspire future generations.
