Farewell to Sushil Modi: A BJP Stalwart’s Enduring Impact on Bihar Politics

Sushil Modi

On Monday evening, Sushil Modi, a senior figure in the BJP, passed away at Delhi’s All-India Institute of Medical Sciences following his battle with cancer. The 72-year-old had been receiving treatment in the intensive care unit of AIIMS for the past month.

Formerly a prominent figure within the BJP in Bihar, Sushil Modi withdrew from the ongoing Lok Sabha elections due to his declining health. He communicated this decision via social media on April 3, sharing, “I have been contending with cancer for the past 6 months. Now, I feel compelled to disclose this to everyone. I won’t be able to participate in the Lok Sabha elections. I have briefed the Prime Minister on everything. Forever grateful and dedicated to the nation, Bihar, and the party.”

His absence was particularly keenly felt in Bihar, where he had wielded considerable influence within the party over three decades. Serving as Bihar’s Deputy Chief Minister in two terms spanning 11 years from 2005 to 2020, he played a crucial role in shaping the state’s political landscape alongside Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

The news of Sushil Modi’s demise prompted mourning from numerous senior BJP figures, including Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, and Ravi Shankar Prasad. Amit Shah expressed his condolences, acknowledging Sushil Modi’s contributions to Bihar’s politics and his advocacy for marginalized communities. BJP Chief JP Nadda praised Sushil Modi’s enduring commitment to Bihar’s development and his pivotal role in propelling the state forward.

Rajnath Singh also paid tribute to Sushil Modi’s endeavors towards Bihar’s progress, while former Bihar Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi extended his sympathies, highlighting Sushil Modi’s contributions as Deputy Chief Minister and Rajya Sabha MP.

Even political adversaries such as Tejashwi Yadav and Mamata Banerjee offered their condolences, recognizing Sushil Modi’s significance in Bihar politics and his dedication to public service.

Sushil Modi’s passing marks the conclusion of a chapter in Bihar’s political narrative, leaving behind a legacy of service and dedication that will resonate with many.
