In a significant move for the Indian National Congress, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is preparing to contest her first Lok Sabha election from the Wayanad constituency in Kerala. This opportunity arises as her brother, Rahul Gandhi, who recently won the seat in the 2024 elections, has decided to vacate it in favor of retaining Raebareli, a long-time Gandhi family stronghold. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge made the announcement, marking a new chapter in Priyanka’s political career. Priyanka expressed her excitement and commitment to the people of Wayanad, stating, “I am very happy to be able to represent Wayanad and I will not let them feel his (Rahul Gandhi’s) absence. I will work hard and try my best to make everyone happy and be a good representative.”
Priyanka also underscored her deep ties with Raebareli and Amethi, pledging to support her brother while dedicating herself to her new constituency. Reflecting on his connection with Wayanad, Rahul Gandhi acknowledged the emotional difficulty of his decision. He appreciated the support he received from Wayanad’s residents over the past five years and committed to continuing his visits and fulfilling his promises. “The last five years as a member of Parliament from Wayanad have been a very fantastic and enjoyable experience. The people of Wayanad gave me support, energy to fight in a very difficult time. I will never forget that,” Rahul said.
The decision followed a high-level meeting at Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence, which included senior Congress leaders such as Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, KC Venugopal, and Priyanka Gandhi. This strategic choice aims to reinforce the Congress party’s presence in Kerala. Rahul Gandhi emphasized that both Raebareli and Wayanad would receive dedicated representation, ensuring that the interests of both constituencies are well-served. Priyanka Gandhi’s entry into the election from Wayanad is seen as a strategic move to strengthen the Congress party’s influence in the southern state, highlighting the party’s broader electoral strategy.
