Rajiv Gandhi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid homage to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on his 33rd death anniversary on Tuesday. Modi posted his tribute on X, saying, “On his death anniversary, my tributes to our former PM Shri Rajiv Gandhi Ji.” Congress leaders including President Mallikarjun Kharge, Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, and MP Rahul Gandhi also honored Rajiv Gandhi by visiting Veer Bhumi in Delhi.

Congress figures such as P Chidambaram and Sachin Pilot were also present in the national capital to pay their respects. Rahul Gandhi conveyed a heartfelt tribute, writing, “Father, Your dreams, my dreams, Your aspirations, my responsibilities. Your memories, today and always, always in my heart.” Sachin Pilot highlighted Rajiv Gandhi’s contributions on X, stating, “I pay my respectful tributes to former Prime Minister Late Shri Rajiv Gandhi on his death anniversary. Unique, historical, and unforgettable works like the computer and telecommunication revolution, empowerment of Panchayati Raj system, promoting youth participation in politics were done by Rajiv Gandhi Ji. As the youngest Prime Minister, with his vision and strong will, he provided new momentum, direction, and energy to the development of the country.”

Jairam Ramesh, a Congress leader, reflected on Rajiv Gandhi’s impactful yet brief political tenure, noting his numerous legacies, including the 1991 manifesto advocating for liberalization. Ramesh outlined Gandhi’s achievements: granting voting rights to 18-year-olds, empowering local governments with women’s reservations, establishing peace in various regions, and ushering India into the IT, computer, and telecom era. He also mentioned Gandhi’s advancements in science, technology, and the strengthening of India’s space and nuclear initiatives.

Rajiv Gandhi’s political journey began in 1984 following the assassination of his mother, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. At 40, he became India’s youngest Prime Minister and led from October 1984 to December 1989. Born on August 20, 1944, his life was tragically cut short on May 21, 1991, by a Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) suicide bomber during an election rally in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu.
