Courtois, Mateo Highlight Real Madrid Impact

Real Madrid

On the inaugural day of White Week at the Universidad Pública Real Madrid Graduate School, Thibaut Courtois and Chus Mateo led the discussions. Real Madrid’s director of Institutional Relations, Emilio Butragueño, moderated the event where Courtois remarked, “Overcoming adversity requires confidence and self-belief. Professionalism in your work is essential. People may remember your football career, but your daily conduct leaves a lasting impression.”

Overcoming Injury

“Positivity is vital. In August, I cried after suffering the worst injury in football, a cruciate ligament tear. Yet, I decided to work hard and return stronger. My mindset was to stay positive, fight, and never give up. Despite others doubting my return, I knew my season wasn’t over.”

Unique Value of Real Madrid

“Externally, you see Real Madrid’s grandeur, but being part of it reveals its true impact on global football. They compete for the Champions League every year. Real Madrid is the best club in the world, and being inside shows its immense influence. Traveling globally, you see the widespread effects.”

Memorable Moments

“I have two standout moments. One was against Galatasaray, where I made several key saves, building my confidence. The other was winning the Champions League final against Liverpool, making numerous saves and being named man of the match – a highlight of my football career.”

Chus Mateo on Excellence During White Week

Chus Mateo inaugurated White Week 2024 by emphasizing excellence: “Managing Real Madrid, with its high expectations, is challenging, but I’ve learned much from my colleagues. The blend of experience and talent is crucial. The group’s effort is paramount. Real Madrid always comes first, and reaching the Final Four results from collective effort, not individual brilliance.”

Real Madrid’s Core Values

“Joining Real Madrid reveals its vast scale. Some aspects are unbelievable until you experience them here, like the relentless spirit. The club instills a never-give-up attitude. Watching their football and basketball teams, you see miracles unique to this club. This spirit fosters lasting success, unlike other clubs where it might be temporary. Last year, our play-off win over Partizan was because we fought to the end.”

Success Advice

“Hard work is critical. Failure fosters growth as losing shapes you. My advice is not to force outcomes. Dedication and prioritizing important things are key. Goals should not be rushed; they happen in their own time, and you must be ready to seize opportunities when they arise.”

Additional Speakers

The first day of White Week also featured Francisco Panadero, Director of Infrastructures and Asset Development at Real Madrid, discussing asset development. Pilar Jericó, president of BeUp and a visiting professor from Georgetown, shared insights on essential leadership.
