British lawmakers will seek to expel Prime Minister Liz Truss, despite Downing Street’s warnings that it could trigger general elections, the Daily Mailreported.
According to tabloid reports, more than 100 members of parliament (MPs), who are part of the Conservative Party, are prepared to submit letters de no confidence in Truss, to Graham Brady, head of the Conservative Party’s committee that organizes the leadership race, according to unnamed sources.
Britain is in political turmoil and has lost three prime ministers to it since its 2016 vote to leave the European Union.
According to the report Brady was urged by the MPs, to tell Truss that her time is up or to modify the rules of political parties to allow for an immediate vote in confidence in Truss’ leadership.
Graham is reported to be resisting the move. Graham and newly appointed Chancellor Jeremy Hunt should have the opportunity to establish economic strategy in a budget, the report said.
Separately The Times reported that several lawmakers had secret discussions about replacing Truss by a new leader.
Truss, who was elected to the Conservative Party’s leadership last month, after promising to reduce taxes, is fighting for political survival after she dropped key components of the programme.
This has led to discontent within the party and it is currently trailing Labour Party in opinion surveys.
